A note on Jouissance

Jouissance was born in the pages of the books we read beneath the sheets. Even today, stories such as Histoire d’O and the diaries of Anaïs Nin still manage to discompose and arouse readers thanks to their radical complexity. Our scents are inspired by the female artists, writers and fictional characters who taught us to fantasise and to desire. In homage to them, our approach is inspired by the specificity of women's language, art and creativity.

‘Jouissance’ is a complex concept meaning to transgress the limits imposed on pleasure, and linked to femininity because of women’s capacity for experiencing surplus enjoyment. French feminist writer Hélène Cixous thinks of it as an erotic, mystical abundance – the source of female creative power.

Subversive Scent

Just like our inspirations, our fragrances are transgressive. Inspired by vintage perfumes, we seek to subvert modern trends for clean, pleasing, unobtrusive smells. Instead, we use shocking olfactory combinations, dirty undertones and aldehydic notes to confront taboos and push boundaries.

III.

Return of the IRL

Increasingly numbed by the virtual world, we seek the pleasures of the flesh. Our fragrances lift sensual descriptions from the pages and make them real. We source out-of-print books to study and share with our circle. We gather together for events that stimulate our minds and senses – banquets, workshops, salons, talks and film screenings.

Écriture féminine

The exploration and cultivation of women’s writing and creativity is the driving force behind Jouissance. We are inspired by women artists of the past and present, but also seek to support the next generation of female creatives with regular collaborations, commissions and partnerships.

Our Circle

Through the love of perfume, art, literature and cinema, we create a community and a platform for women to explore their erotic imaginations and exchange creative inspirations. The Jouissance community burgeoned through our communal journal prompt platform, and will continue to grow through special events hosted by artists and writers.
