Best known as the creator of Valentina, a famed erotic comic strip heroine of the 1960s, Guido Crepax was an Italian architect and master erotic cartoonist. Through his work, Crepax sought to challenge and disrupt the sexual repression of an Italian society dominated by the doctrine of Catholicism. His 1975 adaptation of Story of O was more than merely an illustration of the text. His longest graphic novel, the story is adapted in its entirety in the artist's trademark elegant style, with quotes from the original text alongside those of Freud and other sources on eroticism. This rare edition also includes introductions from philosopher Roland Barthes and writer and filmmaker Alain Robbe-Grillet.
